Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro, is located in the East African country, Tanzania. It peaks at an incredible summit of 19,341 feet above sea level. Approximately 30,000 people climb Kilimanjaro every year, but only 50 percent of those climbers make it to the top.
Altitude sickness, improper gear, and lack of endurance are the top reasons climbers are unable to complete the 3-day journey. As you ascend the mountain, the oxygen available decreases and can lead to a myriad of acute health issues. Trekkers that do not have the endurance to backpack for long periods of time and are not suited with proper hiking gear will more than likely not complete the climb.
Mount Kilimanjaro includes five distinct ecological zones. Each zone gets colder and drier as the elevation increases. Plant and animal life disappear with the rise in altitude throughout the hike until the arctic zone with Kilimanjaro's glaciers is reached at the summit.
